Magnitsky claimed that he had convicted a number of officials of embezzling more than $230 million from the budget. In 2008, he was arrested and accused of tax evasion. In November 2009, he died in a pre-trial detention center hospital in Moscow.

Court and stage

If the court decides that the accused is guilty, he is given a punishment and a place of imprisonment.

In practice, convicts are distributed according to the severity of the crime. If the period is short, the person may be left in a colony at his place of residence. If the guilt is serious, the convicted person is sent away to serve his punishment. This is justified for several reasons. Until the 90s, the laws of the criminal world were based on purity of thoughts. Theft and murder were considered elite activities in which there was no place for violence. Subtleties of prison laws

In each prison, a senior “supervisor” is selected from among the prisoners, as well as heads of the cells. The system is the same in zones and colonies. But the zones are divided into “red” and “black”. The “Reds” have the so-called cop (police) order, there are no “thieves watching”, and all decisions are made by the zone leadership. In the “blacks,” the official authorities do not have a special status; here everything is decided by thieves’ laws.

The case of Georgia v. Russia

On January 21, 2022, the ECHR partially satisfied Georgia’s claim against the Russian Federation regarding the war in South Ossetia. He did not recognize the jurisdiction of the Russian Federation on Georgian territory during the hostilities of August 8-12, 2008. Therefore, the Russian Federation cannot be recognized as violating the Human Rights Convention during this period. At the same time, he satisfied many of Georgia’s claims, pointing to the “effective control” of the Russian Federation in South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Physical torture

The prisoner is lowered headfirst into a bucket of water and left in this position until the person begins to suffocate. In order to suppress the convict morally, he is lowered with his head not into a bucket, but into a toilet (and sometimes into a bucket of urine). In some situations, before the actual torture, prisoners are stripped naked and forced to crawl on all fours to the toilet.

Beatings

This type of torture is one of the most common, but at the same time unoriginal. Both the colony staff and some of the prisoners who “work” for the administration take part in the beating process. In order to avoid leaving bruises and hematomas, beating instruments are wrapped in soft cloth. Usually, the winter clothes of the prisoners themselves are used for this. In some colonies, guards put a club in their felt boots and hit them on the head, while in others they hit them on the heels.

Rape

One of the former prisoners says: “After lights out, administration “assistants” came into my cell and forcibly took me to the next cell. There they stripped me naked, laid me on a large table, and tied my hands and feet to the legs of the table. After that, they started sticking their hands into the anus. At this time I experienced unreal pain and moral humiliation. Blood was flowing." Often, clubs, bottles, and chair legs are used during rape.

Noose or package

A rope, belt or elastic band is used as a noose . They put a bag over the head and begin to choke the convict. In some cases, to enhance the effect, they spray the bag with pepper spray or hit the inmate with a stun gun. If a prisoner dies during torture, this death is passed off as suicide.

Crucifixion

All limbs are positioned to their maximum width and tied to the grid. Staying in this position even for half an hour leads to pain in the joints. After a person is released, he cannot walk normally or bend his arms and legs for a long time.

Often the process of hanging is accompanied by beating or sexual rape, and collectively.

Harsh conditions of detention

In order to put pressure on prisoners, guards came up with the following ways to worsen the conditions of serving their sentences :

• turning off heating in winter;
• Holodomor.

During the heating shutdown period, prisoners are not given mattresses - they can only sleep on iron ice beds. Warm clothing will also be confiscated. The water in the taps is only cold, so after taking a shower there is a chance of contracting a serious illness, including pneumonia.

Pulling out nails

Torture may begin directly with the process of tearing out nails , and sometimes the prisoner is abused in other ways before this. For example, they push sewing needles or even wood chips under his nails. In 2010, a case was made public when relatives of a prisoner brought nails to the head of the colony as evidence of abuse. However, the boss assured that the convict lost his nails due to a fungal disease.

Acceptance

A kind of initiation into prisoners. The newly arrived inmate is lined up in front of a line of “grandfathers”. The newcomer begins to run along the line, and each “grandfather” hits him with a baton. The action continues until the condemned person falls from pain and powerlessness. However, the dedication does not end there. After the new prisoner has been covered in his own blood for a sufficient time, he is taken to a special room to be searched.

Flushing

A large amount of cold water is poured into the convict’s rectum - up to 5 liters at a time. At the administration level, the need for such a procedure is explained by the exclusion of the possibility of bringing prohibited items into the territory of the colony.

Household work

“Recruits” or offenders are forced to clean the cell, corridors or toilet area. Moreover, convicts must do this only with a toothbrush.

Another type of bullying is forcing patients to work . For example, when a patient with tuberculosis is forced to clean the parade ground in cold rainy weather.

Joker

In this case, the convict's mouth is torn from the corners. Moreover, they do not always use a knife or other sharp object; sometimes this is done simply by force of hand. A convict who served his sentence in a Karelian colony says that before tearing his mouth open, the officers beat him and then choked him with a gas mask.

Boiling water

Hot water is forcibly poured into the prisoner's mouth . The fact of such torture was recorded in “Matrosskaya Tishina.” The prisoner was taken to the hospital and died without regaining consciousness.

Paratroopers

The convict is placed in the same cell with other prisoners who cooperate with the administration of the colony. They beat the prisoner and force him to lie on the floor. And then they start jumping on him from the second tier of the bed. Such torture is practiced in “Matroskaya Tishina”, as well as in the Tagil colony.

Thread in the eye of a needle

The prisoner's legs are handcuffed. After this, the person’s arms are folded around his hips and cuffed with tight handcuffs - “death cuffs”. The convict is forced to remain in this position for several days, and sometimes even weeks.

Relaxing on a stool

The convicts' hands are chained to the floor, and the prisoner himself is seated on special homemade chairs with pointed wire ribs . After several hours of sitting like this, cuts and abrasions form on the buttocks. In unsanitary conditions and lack of proper treatment, these wounds soon rot.

Upside down

The tortured person is hung by his feet from the window bars. At the same time, the hands are also shackled. In this position, all limbs become numb, but the most dangerous thing is that blood flows in large quantities to the brain. Over a long period of time, such a process threatens fainting, increased blood pressure and all the ensuing consequences.

Under the bed

The inmates have their hands cuffed behind their backs . Then the legs are tied. Moreover, they tie it not just once, but several times: near the foot, on the knees and on the hips.

After this, the neck is tightly tied to the legs and the convict is sent under the bed. Several sadists sit on it.

Force feeding

The prisoner's nose is covered. The following is used as food: strong alcoholic drinks, pepper (or other hot) tinctures, soapy water, urine.

Important! A special type of such torture is forced feeding of feces.

Sleep deprivation

There are quite a few options for preventing a convicted person from sleeping . But the two most common are:

• at the slightest attempt to close your eyes and doze off, the guards prick the inmates with sharp needles;
• the prisoner is seated on a chair, a thin fishing line is wrapped around his neck, when the subject closes his eyes, the “elders” pull this fishing line, causing acute pain.

Forced administration of narcotic drugs or neuroleptics

The prisoner is tied to a table (his arms and legs are tied to the legs of the table), and narcotic substances are injected into his blood. This continues for a long time until the person being tortured feels addicted to the drugs. He later dies from lack of dosage.

Forces of nature

Prisoners are stripped naked and put outside, chained in one position . In summer, convicts suffer from the scorching sun and flying insects, and in winter – from the cold.
